illuminated text # 2

One hundred million degrees below freezing

And Natasha buttoning up her eyes

a couple of weeks ago a cool as heck blogger named pinky binks asked me to collaborate on a post

i made the above image as a response to the opening lines of pinky’s poem ‘haunted all the way by you’

pinky’s blog is playful, subversive and full of brilliant visual weirdnesses

two of my favourite recent pieces are ‘the negative space of elizabeth’ and ‘inspired by india’

hope you ENJOY!!!

OK, I saw the two links and I enjoyed them. Sorry to get the chance now,(it is not about them, but the question was already there, just waiting to pop) but I have always wondered if in a conceptual work a good idea is enough. I mean is it OK to see the clever idea and admire it through a work that is not up there? (I don’t use the word art to avoid such discussions about art) I would really like to know what you believe!

hey vassilis, good to hear from you.

i guess in the case of conceptual art, the idea is generally more important than anything else, right? all other aesthetic considerations have purposefully been stripped away. the ‘ideal’ piece of art, for me, though, is one that attains a perfect synthesis between the image’s idea / underlying philosophy, and a number of other elements. these could include humour overlaying depth / pathos, societal commentary, colouring / aesthetic contrasts etc etc etc. pretty sure i’ll never personally achieve this ideal (and tbh i don’t take my own ‘work’ that seriously at the moment), but for me it’s what the best art does. so no, imo, just a good idea isn’t enough.. for something to genuinely ‘succeed’ – and the criteria for this is highly subjective, of course – it needs to combine a great idea with these (or countless other) elements.

      well, that’s just my opinion… ben πŸ™‚
